What Is Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding uses a tracked machine with a carbide-toothed wheel to shred a tree stump into small wood chips, grinding well below the soil line. Unlike digging a stump out, grinding leaves the surrounding yard intact and produces mulch you can use or have us haul away. The result is a clean, level surface ready for grass or planting.

When Is Stump Grinding Necessary?

Grinding is necessary when a stump is a tripping hazard, is attracting pests or fungus, is in the way of mowing or a new landscape feature, or is simply an eyesore you want gone. Left alone, stumps can take a decade to decompose and often sprout unwanted suckers. Grinding solves it in a single visit.

What Is Required For Stump Grinding?

We need clear access to the stump (a minimum gate width of 36 inches for our grinder) and a quick utility check for any underground lines near the root zone. Most stumps are ground 6–12 inches below grade. We backfill the hole with the resulting mulch unless you'd prefer it removed.
